The Religion of Scientology: A Description
:
Note: We use this quote throughout the web site to emphasize that Hubbard's words are sacred scripture.
The Scientology religion is based exclusively upon L. Ron Hubbard's research, writings and recorded lectures — all of which constitute the Scriptures of the religion.
… He is the only source of the religion, and he has no successor. A fundamental doctrine of the Scientology religion is that spiritual freedom can be attained only if the path outlined in these works is followed without deviation, for it is an intensively researched and workable route.
Theology and Practice of a Contemporary Religion
lists the specific books (but not lectures and recordings) that are
considered scripture.
Scientology is a fundamentalist religion, requiring parishioners to
follow Source exactly. From
Scripture and Symbols of the Scientology Religion
:
The Scripture of the Scientology religion consists of the writings and recorded spoken words of L. Ron Hubbard on the subject of Dianetics and Scientology. … This Scripture is the sole source of all doctrine regarding the religion of Scientology and it is an inherent principle of the religion that only by exactly following the path it out lines can mankind achieve spiritual salvation.
Note: There is evidence that the current management of the Church has
selectively modified some source materials; see Kristi Wachter's
Altering the Tech
for examples.
Church canon declares that only L. Ron Hubbard can alter scriptures, thus, his death in 1986 effectively renders Source immutable. From Scientology Policy Directive 19, "The Integrity of Source":
It is hereafter firm Church policy that LRH ISSUES ARE TO BE LEFT INTACT AS ISSUED.
No one except LRH may cancel his issues.
No one except LRH can revise his issues….
The
The Religious Technology Center
(RTC) is the Scientology organization that oversees Church orthodoxy and
ensures Source remains unaltered:
To ensure the purity of the religion and its Scriptures, RTC supervised a massive five-year project, only recently completed, to republish all of Mr. Hubbard's writings on Dianetics and Scientology. RTC ensured that the authenticity of each work was verified by comparing them word by word with his original manuscripts — only once RTC was satisfied that the works were accurate were they republished. RTC then helped see that archival editions of these materials were produced, thus ensuring the availability of the pure unadulterated writings of Mr. Hubbard to the coming generations. As part of this project, Mr. Hubbard's original tape-recorded lectures — most of them over three decades old — were restored using state-of-the-art technology, and then accurately transcribed. Even the translations of the Scripture are scrupulously checked for accuracy by RTC prior to any publication.
Scripture and Symbols of the Scientology Religion
provides further emphasis on the safeguarding of Source:
To ensure the purity and orthodoxy of the Scripture, the copyrights on all of its published works, which are owned exclusively by the Church for the benefit of the religion, have been registered in all relevant countries. These registrations ensure that the Scripture cannot be altered, perverted or taken out of context for improper or harmful ends.
Thus, when Hubbard writes "the only way you can control people is to lie to them", it has the force of religious law for Scientologists.
