Where prejudice exists it always discolors our thoughts -Mark Twain
Search engines use a variety of techniques for finding and presenting the web pages you seek. One such technique ranks sites by popularity and presents them in descending order. Research shows that people often don't look past the first page of results, so the less popular sites are pushed out of sight and out of consideration.
A web site's popularity is determined, in part, by the number of
other sites linking to it; for instance, see
how Google works
.
The Church of Scientology has taken advantage of this technique by
registering hundreds of domains to host nearly identical pages and
interlinking them all. It makes them look very popular. The
web page
"The Church of Scientology's Supremacy over the search term 'Scientology' on Google
"
presents an excellent and graphically clear analysis of the Church's
effort.
We strongly believe that an understanding of both critics' and proponents' viewpoints is necessary to form an educated opinion. Thus we have decided to retain our active links to Church of Scientology web sites. Our few links will add little to the weight of the Church's own profuse interlinking and it is quite likely that search engines will eventually modify their algorithms to adjust for the Church's "Googlebombing" techniques.
